Another discussion yesterday with a board of directors debriefing a value mapping exercise to define the current organizational culture. The interesting aspect of this tool and approach is that it not only illustrates what is just below the surface; it is very much about how they make decisions, understand the context of the influence of their expectations of organizational performance, and much more. I believe that this new awareness will be about how they will, in the near future, set the context for the way their programs and services will impact both the next generations of both clients, staff and board. My experience with organizational leadership is that this new awareness brings out cultural conversations when they have never existed before. It establishes the way all stakeholders may engage each other, to “know” each other better, leading to better decision-making in the “whole”. Great exercise for next-generation board development!
